Classic Album Review: Sarah Vaughan | Sarah for Lovers

Sophistication can be sexy. Especially when it’s mixed with a touch of sass.

This came out in 2003 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

If music be the food of love, there’s no reason to go hungry at this time of year. As always, there are plenty of new Valentine’s Day albums on the racks to help you get something cooking at your own romantic feast this weekend. Here’s one of them. Now go get ’em, tiger.

COME-ONS: Sophistication can be sexy. Especially when it’s mixed with a touch of sass. Jazz diva Sarah Vaughan had that combination down pat. So does this compilation featuring 16 timeless romantic classics like I’ve Got A Crush On You, It’s Magic, Embraceable You, I’m In The Mood For Love and plenty more. Some feature an orchestra, others just a trio, but Vaughan is swellegant in every setting.

TURN-ONS: Every time Sarah opens her mouth and lets that gorgeous, operatic voice loose. To put it another way: S’wonderful. S’marvellous.

TURN-OFFS: This should be a two-disc set. Hell, make it three.

GOES WITH: Evening wear, velvet gloves, expensive champagne, chocolate mousse, scented candles, rose petals.
