Classic Album Review: Alabama | In the Mood: The Love Songs

The country vets deliver a two-disc set of shmaltzy ballads & corn-pone pop ditties.

This came out in 2003 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

If music be the food of love, there’s no reason to go hungry at this time of year. As always, there are plenty of new Valentine’s Day albums on the racks to help you get something cooking at your own romantic feast this weekend. Here’s one of them. Now go get ’em, tiger.

COME-ONS: If you think a pickup line has something to do with Dodge Ram trucks, you might be an Alabama fan — and the target demographic for this two-disc compilation of shmaltzy ballads and corn-pone pop ditties from the veteran country quartet.

TURN-ONS: Well, achy-breaky numbers like The Closer You Get, Love In The First Degree and God Must Have Spent A Little More Time On You sure sound sincere enough. Plus, the two-disc format means you don’t have to go through musicus interruptus, if you know what I mean.

TURN-OFFS: Hearing the ’bama boys sing about making, “love … sweet love” migiht give you a visual you really don’t need.

GOES WITH: BBQ, Budweiser, a bouquet of daisies, blue jeans, gigantic belt buckles, hay lofts.
