This came out in 2002 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):
Want proof of the Winnipeg music scene’s vitality and vibrancy? It has enough ska bands to support their own sub-scene. And, more to the point for my purposes, enough bands to issue a pretty decent compilation CD.
Peg City Skank gathers new and previously released gems from seven local acts: The Wedgewoods, The Afterbeat, RWPO (Royal Winnipeg Porn Orchestra), Bailey’s Car, The Barrymores, The Racketeers and Greg (Milka) Crowe. All of whom, to varying degrees, display their proficiency with the sprightly herky-jerk rhythms, chukka-chunk guitars, springy melodies, punchy horns and party vibes of Jamaican reggae, bluebeat and ska. As The Afterbeat put it on Groove Yeah: “Ska music is where it’s at / We got the rhythm down pat … We got the moves, we got the looks and we definitely got the sound.” Can’t beat that.
