Classic Album Review: Useless I.D. | Bad Story, Happy Ending

The Israeli outfit prove that in punk circles, it really is a small world after all.

This came out in 2001 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

Any doubts that punk rock truly is a global phenomenon should be erased once and for all by this CD from Israeli popcore outfit Useless I.D.

So what does Israeli popcore sound like, you ask? Well, pretty much like its SoCal counterpart, interestingly enough. Bad Story, Happy Ending’s 15 songs are brimming over with the same caffeinated polka beats, the same buzzsaw guitars, the same snotty-sweet layers of vocal harmony and the same teen-angst lyrics of more chart-topping popcore outfits than we could name. Chances are if they were from Hollywood instead of Haifa, you’d have heard of them before now too. After all, it may be a big planet — but in punk circles, it’s a small world.
