Sonic Reducers | Dave Grohl’s Big Mistake

The superstar drummer almost joined Gwar? We have something to say about that.

Dave Grohl has been in some good bands over the years. But today we learned that he was almost in one more: Back in the day, he nearly joined the costumed shock-rock outfit GWAR.

GWAR were looking for a drummer,” the powerhouse drummer recently told Rolling Stone. “And I talked to their guitar player Dewey (Rowell, aka Flattus Maximus) about it. And he’s, like, ‘It’s great, and you get to design your own costume.’ As drummer, you don’t want something that covers your face fully. You want your arms to be free. So I was, like, ‘Cool.’ So I started kind of drawing this thing. At the time GWAR was a band that would draw like 700 people, right? Which is huge. And then the more I thought about it, am I really gonna invite my uncle to see me play when there’s like fake blood and cum shooting all over the place?” The only thing that could make this story better is GWAR’s response: “Just think, he could have been working his ass off playing drums in a rubber monster suit all these years. Boy, did he make the wrong choice.” For more about this earth-shattering story, check out today’s episode of Sonic Reducers, where Eric Alper and I will marvel at what might have been, share our memories of being in the GWAR splash zone, and compare our favourite Grohl guest spots and side projects.
