Devon tells you how it’s going to go in her new single Want To Know — premiering exclusively on Tinnitist.
The latest preview of the New York pop artist’s upcoming EP Sitting Up Straight, the self-assured Want To Know time-travels back to the ’80s, setting Devon’s intimate vocals against icy-cool electro and a searing guitar solo reminiscent of Prince in his prime.
“My new EP has been an awesome experience for me in learning to be a more experimental lyricist / producer,” Devon says. “The process of creating songs from a place of empowerment and from a place of growth allowed me to be less precious with certain aspects of songwriting and to be more trusting of what felt good — finding my own way to sit up straight and to take up space along the way.”
Sitting Up Straight will be Devon’s fourth collection of thoughtful examinations of life in translation. Raised in a musical family, she knew that she was destined for a life-long musical journey. At an early age, she was writing and self-producing her music and by the time she was a teenager, she released her well-received debut Love & Haight. The 2014 album earned her comparisons to Alanis Morissette. That year, she traversed the Eastern U.S., playing select dates on the Vans Warped Tour. Along the way, she enlisted two dozen artists including Bebe Rexha, New Years Day, Mayday Parade, We The Kings, Lynn Gvnn of PVRIS and Metro Station to take part in a charming montage for her Dance With Me video.
Those experiences helped shape her 2017 album What If I, which included the breakout Heart, and provided a foundation for her introspective 2019 EP, Songs from the Back of a Bar. Standouts on the latter included I’ll Remember This, which received a Jake Justice remix, and I Bet You’d Like Me Better at Coachella, an ode to self-actualization. It’s all brought her to Sitting Up Straight, a self-assured landscape of purpose and pace. Colored with shades of Lorde, Tones And I and Suzanne Vega, Devon delves into the throes of adulthood with a confident groove.
Sitting Up Straight will be available Oct. 2 via AWAL. Want to Know arrives on Aug. 21. Listen to it above, pre-save it HERE, check out more of Devon‘s music below, and keep up with her via her website, Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
