Late-Night TV Music (Death of Democracy Edition) | Feb. 4, 2020

Mura Masa & Slowthai offer a pragmatic coping mechanism for the current climate.

The real-time implosion of American democracy this week may make for compelling television (if you watch that sort of thing; me, I prefer a good Lifetime movie about a 30-something woman who goes back to school as a murderous cheerleader). But it has not been kind to the late-night TV music scene. On the plus side, that leaves more room for the likes of Guernsey artist Mura Masa and rapper Slowthai, who vent their frustration with contemporary existence (and outine a very pragmatic coping mechanism) with their tensely wired performance of Deal Wiv It on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. For those who would prefer something a little less topical and/or tightly wound, beloved indie-rockers Big Thief are happy to oblige with their rendition of Shoulders on Jimmy Kimmel Live. And just for a touch of nostalgia, I tossed in Finneas’ rendition of Let’s Fall in Love for the Night from the Tonight Show on Monday — aka The Good Old Days. Enjoy. And remember; if TV has taught us anything, it’s that it is never too late to steal a cheerleader’s identity, go back to school and start over. See you on the mat.
