The Pierre François Trio Open Your Eyes With 5 AM Jazz

The veteran Montreal pianist leads his crack rhythm section through a diverse collection of excellent tracks that balance adventurousness with accessibility.

The Pierre François Trio rise and shine on their sophisticated, subtle and stylish new album 5 AM — showcasing today on Tinnitist.

Featuring original compositions and arrangements by Montreal jazz pianist François, 5 AM spotlights the deep chemistry of three musicians who enjoy a long history of collaboration. Through a diversity of tracks from straight-eight ECM to Afro-Cuban to swing, François, dependable bassist Remi-Jean Leblanc and dextrous drummer Rich Irwin create spacious layers of sound underpinned by a flowing groove. Delivered with the relaxed confidence and near-psychic interplay that can only come with years of individual and collective experience, these impressive, immediate tracks walk the line between adventurous and approachable, appealing to both casual jazz newcomers and serious students of the form.

A regular on the Montreal scene, François has played throughout North America and Europe with greats such as Jean-Pierre Zanella, Paul Brochu, Rémi Bolduc, André White, Fraser Hollins, Al McLean, Mike Moreno, Donny McCaslin, André Leroux and many others. He holds a degree in jazz performance from McGill University, and studied with jazz great Gary Burton at Berklee School of Music in Boston, as well as with pianists Fred Hersh, Kenny Werner and Kevin Hays. In addition to being an active performer, Pierre has taught jazz piano and jazz arranging at CEGEP St-Laurent since 2006.
