Classic Album Review: Les Rythmes Digitales | Darkdancer

The Parisian producer's second LP is a shamelessly groovy slave to the ’70s & ’80s.

This came out in 1999 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

If you’ve ever wondered what became of the crappy old instruments from the ’80s — all those plinky drum machines, cheesey Mini-Moogs and waxy string synths — well, here’s the answer: Lacques Lu Cont of Les Rythmes Digitales bought ’em.

Well, maybe not all of them. But he definitely bought into the whole sound. Like fellow Parisians Air, Cassius and Daft Punk, his second CD is a shamelessly groovy slave to ’70s disco and ’80s electropop, from the Human League-meets-Sweet Dreams sound and faux disco vibe to the real guest vocals from has-beens like Nik Kershaw and Shannon (Let The Music Play). And you gotta love anybody who calls a song Jacques Your Body. He’ll Jacques your booty.
