Classic Album Review: Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young | Looking Forward

The hippie gods' first studio LP in a decade is more attactive in theory than reality.

This came out in 1999 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

In the same way that Crosby, Stills, Nash And Young have always been more of a legend / dream / fantasy than an actual functioning band, this album — only the third they’ve manage to squeeze out amid 30 years of bickering, breaking up and reforming in various permutations — is more attractive in theory than in reality.

Sure, they still harmonize like a choir of hippie angels. But let’s face it, with the exception of Neil Young, none of them has written a decent song in decades. That is made painfully clear in this endless parade of trite sentiment, high-school poetry and rehashed licks — especially Stephen StillsSeen Enough, a third-rate rewrite of Subterranean Homesick Blues. Even Neil isn’t at his most original here, turning in a number that’s basically Heart Of Gold with new lyrics. Presumably he’s saving his A material for himself. Good thinking. After hearing this, the only thing some will be looking forward to is CSNY’s next breakup.
