This came out in 2004 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):
Golden-voiced alt-country goddess Neko Case is a unique talent. So no one should be surprised that her new live set The Tigers Have Spoken is far from your average concert recording.
Instead of just rehashing her own old songs, the brassy Case — backed here by beloved Canadian rootsmeisters The Sadies — deliver a rawboned, compellingly immediate set of new originals like the twangy If You Knew and the jangly title cut, peppered with beloved oldies like the Nervous Eaters’ garage-rock gem Loretta and Loretta Lynn’s romping honky-tonker Rated X. For a finale, Neko goes to the backporch for a bluegrass version of This Little Light and enlists a crowd of several hundred as backing vocalists on Wayfaring Stranger. Oh, and she advocates feeding unwanted children to tigers. Did I mention she’s unique?
