Mammal Talk lead an excursion deep into the heart of Funk Town on their debut single — showcasing today on Tinnitist.
Drawing inspiration from roots music, funk, pop, and R&B, the Baltimore band’s sound blends live instrumentation like strings and horns, and features vocalists with modern electronic elements, resulting in a unique yet familiar sonic experience. Funk Town is the first single off their upcoming album Mammal Talk Vol 1.
Co-written by bandmembers Matt Chase, Mike Saunders and Cory Baker, with lyrics by Mike Legere, Funk Town delivers an uplifting message about the power of love and its ability to provide shelter from the chaos of the outside world. The song captures the idea that, in a strong relationship, love can act as a sanctuary — a place of calm and stability amidst the disorientation and unpredictability of life.
Legere describes the track as “a reflection on the contrast between the disorienting and chaotic nature of the world and the strength and stability of a happy marriage, or strong relationship. A safe space.” He elaborates that his inspiration came from imagining that, even though “the world might be falling apart outside, inside this space, things feel strong, safe, and serene.”
Funk Town crafts a new age of funk that is timeless and forward-thinking, blending soulful melodies with deep rhythms. The song was tracked at Wright Way studios in Baltimore with the excellent mixing and recording engineer and studio owner, Grammy winner Steve Wright (Future Islands, M.I.A., Slipknot).
