Classic Album Review: The Dirty Dozen Brass Band | Funeral For A Friend

The New Orleans veterans send off one of their own with this personal outing.

This came out in 2004 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

There’s nothing like a New Orleans funeral. Especially not when The Dirty Dozen Brass Band are providing the music. And doing the mourning.

On the most personal disc of their career, these Crescent City legends send off recently deceased founding sousaphonist Anthony (Tuba Fats) Lacen with a program of stirring gospel standards set to jubilant Dixieland grooves. Exceptionally moving — in more ways than one.
