Classic Album Review: Despistado | The Emergency Response

The Regina emo-popsters earn their buzz-band status with this outstanding EP.

This came out in 2004 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

They’re one of the newest buzz bands on the underground scene. They’re signed to a cool independent label in the U.S. Their new EP is getting some serious critical attention. And oh yeah, they’re from Regina.

Who knew Despistado had it in them? Well, the folks at Delaware’s Jade Tree Records obviously did the first time they heard The Emergency Response, with its half-dozen shards of passionately melodic emo-pop stitched together from wiry guitar angles, sprinting backbeats, overlapping vocal desperation and jittery post-adolescent angst. One listen to intriguingly intense cuts like A Stirstick’s Prediction and Can I Please Have An Order Of Girl w/ A Side Of Confused and I bet you’ll hear it too. Even better: Go hear it in person when these Queen City kids play near you.
