Classic Album Review: The Rentals | Seven More Minutes

The ex-Weezer bassist trades cool quirk for warm Europop on his sophomore set.

This came out in 1999 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

Former Weezer bassist Matt Sharp’s first solo outing, 1995’s Return Of The Rentals, was a goofy, synth-laden ode to ’80s new wave.

But now that we’re screeching into the next millennium, Sharp has fittingly moved into the ’90s on his long-awaited — and totally satisfying — return to The Rentals. Mainly, he’s traded in his cool North American quirk for warm Europop (no surprise — most of the disc was written in Barcelona) and enlisted the help of members of Blur, Lush, Ash and Elastica to give it an authentically rich, powerfully poppy sound. Oh sure, the vintage Cars synths are still there, but now they’re an instrument instead of an in-joke. Seven More Minutes delivers many times that amount in enjoyment.
