Classic Album Review: Sekiden | Junior Fiction

The Aussie power-pop trio combine ’80s new wave synths with ’90s alt-rock guitars.

This came out in 2004 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

Looks like ’70s-style riff-rawk isn’t the only sound bubbling up from Down Under this year.

Meet Sekiden, an Aussie trio who combine ’80s new wave synthesizers with ’90s alt-rock guitars to create pure power-pop for now people. Imagine The Cars with distortion pedals and Marshall stacks to go with all those moody melodies, bubblegum harmonies and punchy rhythms. Then add plenty of clever-boy lyrics, a few dashes of Weezer and Fountains of Wayne, and maybe even a touch of Rick Springfield, and you’ve found the secret recipe behind sweet, addictive pop nuggets like Girl League, Pinball Summer, 1+1=Heartache and S-T-A-Y. You’ll L-O-V-E it.
