Wynona Bleach are up for A Swim In The Bay with you on their latest single and video — showcasing today on Tinnitist.
The classic-sounding new single from the Northern Irish alt-rockers’ forthcoming album, Swim In the Bay isn’t exactly coy. Nor is it about a refreshing dip in a body of water. The song is boldly and unashamedly inspired by the act of giving oral (and/or aural) pleasure, in keeping with the fearless themes of the group’s 2022 debut album Moonsoake. Reminiscent of Smashing Pumpkins, Curve, The Joy Formidable and Wolf Alice, Swim In the Bay washes over you with its loud grungy energy, unmistakeable hooks and lush melodies. It was recorded in the band’s rehearsal room/studio — an old ballroom above a working men’s club in Belfast.
Mixing alternative rock, shoegaze and power pop, Wynona Bleach are a quintet from Belfast. They have come a long way since forming in 2018 as R51 and have achieved much in that time: Performing at Reading & Leeds Festival, a 12-date headline tour of Russia, and support to rock legends Feeder, Slow Readers Club, Lonely The Brave and more.
2021 saw them sign to indie label Fierce Panda (Coldplay, Placebo, Death Cab For Cutie). Moonsoake arrived in early 2022, unveiling an exciting and energetically passionate body of work, screaming battered hearts and fractured emotions. It was recorded after the band were chosen to support Alice in Chains for the sold-out Irish leg of their 2019 tour. Moonsoake was cut with Bill Ryder-Jones in an abandoned factory in Portugal that was outfitted with recording gear hauled there by the band. The album features tracks mixed by Grammy-nominated Andy Bradfield and Avril Mackintosh (Manic Street Preachers, Tori Amos, Bjork). Moonsoake possesses a defiant, raucous, rock energy along with a gloriously sweet and pretty colour palette, the music embellished by scathing, girl-crossed vocals.
In late 2022, the band were nominated for the Northern Ireland Music Prize for both album and live act. A winter tour in 2022 culminated in two shows at Other Voices Festival. The band started 2023 with a BBC Sounds session, a first visit to the U.S.A with showcases at SXSW and New Colossus Festival NYC, and an Irish tour supporting Ash. In 2024, the band are excited for the next stage in their musical evolution: A yet-to-be-named sophomore album.
