Classic Album Review: Snowpony | Slow-Motion World Of …

Stereolab & MVB refugees make like Luscious Jackson — if they went to art school.

This came out in 1998 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

With ex-Stereolab keyboardist Katherine Gifford and former My Bloody Valentine bassist Debbie Googe in charge, you’d expect this to be a spacey CD of languid, shoegazing edge-pop. And you’d be right.

But there are a few surprises. The total lack of guitar, for instance, which gives the ladies room to stretch out, leving Googe’s sinewy, rubber bass to anchor Gifford’s creatively wigged-out keyboards and mopey, affectless vocals. Think Luscious Jackson — if they went to art school.
