Exclusive Album Premiere: 54•40 | West Coast Band

Nightmarish gigs. Tripping roadies. Drunken fans. Music-biz weasels. Econoline vans. The Can-rock veterans revisit them all in this engaging, entertaining musical memoir.

THE EDITED PRESS RELEASE:54•40 have been telling Canada where they came from and where they’re going for the last 40 years. But Neil, Brad, Dave and Matt couldn’t make it any clearer than they do on their autobiographical new album West Coast Band. In this collection of tales taken straight from the band’s long career, 54•40 celebrate bizarre shenanigans, odd dynamics, colourful characters and personalities of its members. Simply put: If the career of 54•40 was turned into a Broadway musical, this record would be the original score.

For those who need more information: 54•40 are a legendary Canadian rock band that emerged from the vibrant music scene of Vancouver. Formed in 1981, the band’s name is derived from the westward expansionist James K. Polk (and 11th president of the U.S.) and the political slogan “54-40 or Fight”! Over the years, they have earned a reputation as one of Canada’s most enduring and influential rock acts, captivating audiences with their distinctive sound, thought-provoking lyrics, and powerful performances.

The band’s core members are Neil Osborne (vocal’s, guitar and Brad Merritt (bass). High school friends with a shared passion for music, they were later joined by Phil Comparelli (guitar) and Matt Johnson (drums), who became important contributors to the band’s signature sound. After Comparelli’s departure, Dave Genn joined as the new guitarist. His addition to the lineup brought a fresh perspective and musical talent that complemented the band’s existing sound. Genn had already gained recognition in the Canadian music scene through his work with the Matthew Good Band. With Genn on board, 54•40 further solidified their status as one of Canada’s most cherished bands.

Throughout their career, 54•40 have earned critical acclaim and numerous awards, solidifying their status as Canadian music icons. Their ability to craft introspective and socially conscious lyrics, addressing themes such as personal struggle, love, and political issues, has endeared them to fans. Their music often blends elements of alternative, post-punk, and folk rock, with a raw and organic energy that sets them apart from their contemporaries. Osborne’s soulful vocals, combined with the band’s dynamic instrumentation, create a unique sonic landscape that resonates with audiences of all generations.”
