Classic Album Review: Harry Connick Jr. | Other Hours: Connick on Piano 1

The jazz pianist quits crooning and lets his fingers talking on this tasty offering.

This came out in 2003 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

After all those albums of adult-pop crooning, we almost forgot what a great jazz pianist Harry Connick Jr. was. Maybe he did too.

Thankfully, somebody must have reminded him — and he made Other Hours: Connick On Piano 1 to remind us. On this hour-plus session, Connick shuts up and lets his fingers do the walking, leading a crisp little combo through a swinging set of original instrumentals chock-a-block with boppy grooves and tasty solos. It’s high time Connick got back to basics with Other Hours. Bring on volume 2.
