Classic Album Review: Kaki King | Everybody Loves You

The flamboyant acoustic guitarist finds a fresh approach to an ancient instrument.

This came out in 2003 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

WHAT KIND OF MUSIC DOES SHE PLAY? Rootsy acoustic jazz guitar like you’ve never heard — or seen — before.

WHERE IS SHE FROM? Though she jokingly claims to have been “raised by gypsies” and “breast-fed by 10 different women,” King actually grew up in Atlanta, but now lives in New York, where she has graduated from waitress to frequent performer at the Mercury Lounge.

HOW DOES THIS SOUND? Remember those old Van Halen videos when Eddie puts his left hand over top of the neck and hammers notes with both hands? Now imagine a pixie-ish 23-year-old woman doing it and you’ve got King. Strumming the strings and hammering the fretboard with her right hand as she works the neck like a keyboard with her left — and often using both hands to pound the guitar’s body like a conga drum — King finds a fresh approach to an ancient instrument. But as her album Everybody Loves You makes clear, she isn’t just showing off. Although these 10 solo instrumentals feature a formidable array of fretboard fireworks, King seldom sacrifices substance for style, keeping her grooves tight and her playing understated. No wonder everybody loves her.
