Classic Album Review: The Who | Who’s Next: Deluxe Edition

Townshend and co.'s classic-rock landmark is bolstered by 29 live & studio rarities.

This came out in 2003 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

THE ORIGINAL RELEASE DATE: 1971.

THE BACK STORY: Many fans regard this album as one of Pete Townshend and The Who’s greatest successes. But sometimes it seems like the mercurial Townshend views it as his greatest failure, since it was basically salvaged from the ruins of his abandoned Lifehouse project — an insanely ambitious high-concept sequel to Tommy that involved everything from multi-media to audience participation. Pete really should listen to the fans on this one.

THE GOODIES: Seldom has there been a more perfect rock record. In fact, virtually every tune on the original nine-song disc — Baba O’Riley, Bargain, Love Ain’t For Keeping, My Wife, The Song is Over, Getting in Tune, Going Mobile, Behind Blue Eyes and Won’t Get Fooled Again — is a classic-rock radio staple.

THE EXTRAS: Another 29 — yes, 29 — tracks, including early working versions of some cuts recorded in New York, and a lengthy live recording made during the Lifehouse rehearsals. Plus a 28-page booklet that tells the whole tale. Essential for anyone who has every played air guitar to Won’t Get Fooled Again.
