Albums Of The Week: Desumanos | Desumanos

Supple South American sounds mix with surfy twang and swooshing sonics on this disc from a VIP crew including former Os Mutantes & David Byrne bandmembers.

THE EDITED PRESS RELEASE:Desumanos’ fresh mixture of guitar driven melodies is as evocative as it is playful.

From their native Brazil, the band casts uncompromising surf scents on a handful of songs that also drop in the mix African rhythms, cumbia and lambada. This instrumental project is made up of a dream team of producers and musicians: Kassin (bass), who was member of The +2s and co-produced Gilles Peterson’s Brazilian project Sonzeira, and former Os Mutantes member Liminha (guitar), as well as Felipe and Manoel Cordeiro (guitar), one of the lambada originators, and Stephane San Juan (drums), currently playing with David Byrne.

Across the tracklist of this Desumanos debut album we can find a unique combination of musical styles that are all filtered through the sieve of instrumental surf music without losing their roots anchored in tropical sounds such as cumbia, African rhythms and, of course, popular genres from Brazil such as forró or lambada. Ten original songs in which the guitar is the undisputed protagonist and the tropical atmosphere emanates through each note.”
