Classic Album Review: Various Artists | For the Kids

Grownup stars get in touch with their inner children on a slate of kid-friendly treats.

This came out in 2002 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

It’s never too early to get your crumbsnatchers into music. And here’s a disc that’ll start them off on the right track.

For The Kids is a nifty little affair that lets 16 grownup rock and pop stars get back in touch with their inner children by crooning kid-friendly treats. Alt-oids Cake rock Sesame Street’s zippy mush-mouth classic Mahna Mahna, Barenaked Ladies sweeten up La La La La Lemon, Sarah McLachlan croons Kermit’s Rainbow Connection, Ivy lounge around on Sing, Raine Maida and Chantal Kreviazuk shine on Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, and even crusty old Tom Waits shows off his soft side with Bend Down The Branches. Toss in a handful of likable like-minded cuts by Dan Zanes, Billy Bragg, Darius Rucker, Remy Zero and others, and you’ve got one of the few kids’ records parents will want to hear just as often as the youngsters do.
