America had Johnny Ramone. England had Steve Jones. Here in Canada, we had Gord Lewis. As the guitarist in Hamilton heroes Teenage Head, he was one of the founding fathers and primary architects of Canadian punk. But like too many of this country’s musical pioneers, he never got to enjoy the same riches and rewards as his foreign counterparts. And if his senseless and apparently violent death this past weekend — allegedly at the hands of his son, if reports are accurate — isn’t enough of a final indignity, here’s another damn kick in the teeth: The passing of Olivia Newton-John today likely means Lewis will likely be overlooked in death as he was in life. Bottom line: He deserved better. For those who remember (and those who need to learn), I’m slapping a Teenage Head set from Winnipeg in 1981 at the top of today’s collection of new singles, videos, cover tunes and remixes. RIP, Gord.
