Classic DVD Review: Various Artists | Blank Generation / Dancing Barefoot

Guitarist Ivan Kral is both behind and in front of the camera on this double feature.

This came out in 2002 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

Plenty of people shoot home movies. Even punks. But when you’re Ivan Kral — former guitarist for Patti Smith and Iggy Pop — your home movies feature rock stars instead of relatives.

The Ramones, Television, Talking Heads and Blondie are just a few of the legends captured by Kral in the black-and-white Blank Generation. More’s the pity, then, that his camera didn’t have sound — watching The Ramones play at CBGB isn’t quite the same as hearing them. Thankfully, you get to hear Kral on Dancing Barefoot, a documentary on the Czech-born musician’s career that includes interviews with most of those old cronies. If only he had that microphone back in the day.
