Classic DVD Review: Nirvana | Teen Spirit: The Tribute to Kurt Cobain

This tribute to the grunge saint is better than your average Behind the Music episode.

This came out in 2002 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

“The producers wish to point out that no Nirvana recordings or music feature in this DVD.”

That disclaimer isn’t going to sell this documentary on troubled singer-guitarist and grunge saint Kurt Cobain. Too bad. In truth, Teen Spirit is better than your average Behind the Music episode. Built around old Nirvana interview footage and photos, bolstered by interviews with Seattle scenesters and journalists, Teen Spirit paints an even-handed, unsensational portrait of the late grunge icon. Turns out you can sing Cobain’s praises without playing his songs.
