Classic Album Review: R.L. Burnside | Burnside on Burnside

The Delta blues demon has his mojo working on this smokin' live recording.

This came out in 2002 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

After 74 years and a couple of heart surgeries, Delta blues demon R.L. Burnside still knows how to shake ’em on down. And Burnside on Burnside, his smoking new live album, is all the proof you need.

Recorded in Portland, of all places, it demonstrates quite effectively that ole R.L. can turn any venue into a juke joint and make even the most citified college audience hoot ’n’ holler like they’ve been at the still. While his stepson (on guitar) and his grandson (on drums) hammer down a rock-solid, relentlessly choogling backbeat, R.L. chugs and bellows through a dozen blues and boogie classics whose snakecharmer guitar licks weave a hypnotic spell on your mind even as the greasy grooves get your feets doin’ their duty. On Burnside on Burnside, R.L. has his mojo working overtime.
