Classic Album Review: Various Artists | Not Another Teen Movie

Contemporary artists revamp ’80s pop classics for this sly, smart soundtrack.

This came out in 2001 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

Thankfully, the soundtrack to Not Another Teen Movie is not another teen movie soundtrack.

Instead of the usual crop of rap B-sides, unknown bands and various superstar leftovers, this sly set mirrors the ’80s teen-comedy parody vibe of the film by having contemporary artists revamp classics of that era. Marilyn Manson emerges from his coffin to creepify Soft Cell’s Tainted Love; The Smashing Pumpkins and Scott Weiland swirl their way through Depeche Mode’s Never Let Me Down Again and But Not Tonight; Orgy kick-starts New Order’s Blue Monday while Stabbing Westward take a stab at Bizarre Love Triangle; Goldfinger punk-pop Nena’s 99 Red Balloons; System Of A Down crash through Berlin’s Metro; and Saliva deliver The PretendersMessage of Love, to name a few of the standouts here. If the movie is half this cool, it might not be another teen movie that sucks.
