Classic Album Review: Earth Crisis | Last of the Sane

The straight-edge punks pay homage to classic rock of all stripes on this compilation.

This came out in 2001 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

There are some things in this life I thought I’d never hear. One of them is straight-edge, political-activist hardcore outfit Earth Crisis covering songs by rich, drug-addled rock stars like The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath.

But damned if their new compilation Last of the Sane — a stopgap followup to last year’s Slither — doesn’t include reverently fire-breathing takes on Paint It, Black, The Wanton Song and Children of the Grave, along with classics from Slayer (Hell Awaits Intro), Dead Kennedys (Holiday in Cambodia) and The Misfits (Earth A.D.) and a few old EC demos and compilation cuts. A warning: The sequencing on the disc I got bears little relation to the running order advertised on the cover. Then again, it hardly matters — you know most of these songs already anyway.
