Late-Night TV Music (Take It Down A Notch Edition) | Jan. 26, 2021

Death Cab, Adrianne Lenker, Thad Cockrell & Jacob Collier provide midweek relief.

Hump Day strikes again. After a relatively quiet and managable start to the week, things are jumping here in the Tinnitist bunker today. If you’re in the same boat, fear not. As always, the Late-Night TV Music gods have the solution: A sweet slate of soothing sounds to help decrease your heart rate, lower your blood pressure and generally take everything down a notch.

Let’s start with the coolest, calmest cut of the night: Death Cab For Cutie’s swirly cover of TLC’s Waterfalls on Jimmy Kimmel Live. Feel the stress leaving your body? That’s a good start. And Big Thief’s Adrianne Lenker will keep it flowing with the pastoral calm of her acoustic number Anything on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. Your mood should definitely be improving by now — but it can’t compare to the joy that Thad Cockrell is experiencing. The country singer was reportedly on the verge of throwing in the towel when Jimmy Fallon heard his song in a hardware store recently and booked him on The Tonight Show — where he was clearly savouring his socially distanced performance of Swingin’ with the help of The Roots. Good for him. I only wish I liked the song more. And speaking of socially distant, one-man band Jacob Collier kept to himself as usual while working his magic with a rendition of Sleeping On My Dreams for The Late Late Show With James Corden. Impressive? Sure. But all that hyperactive plate-spinning just reminds me of everything I have to do today. I better watch Death Cab again. See you on the other side.
