20 Questions With Edge

The hip-hop artist on spreading good vibes, loving Leonardo & serving up suya.

Back in July, Canada’s own Edge — not to be confused with The Edge — introduced us to the Vice City Vibes of his slow-rolling single and animated video. Today, he gets into a whole different vibe with my inane questions. Let’s see if he loses his edge:

Introduce yourself: Name, age (feel free to lie), home base, other details you’d like to share (height, weight, identifying marks, astrology sign, your choice).
Hey, I’m Edge, I’m based in British Columbia as of now and I’m a cancer 😊

What is your musical origin story?
Hmmm my origin story dates to when I was 13/14… There was a school Christmas program and three friends, and I came together to form a rap group for the program. We did our thing and the school loved us; we were talked about for weeks to come. Fast forward a few years later and we were still making music, saving every last bit of our lunch money to get into the studio to record songs every other weekend and would later release on a website. We eventually went our separate ways due to friends moving to different countries and schools, but I kept at this till I was a little bit known around other schools, and playing shows etc… and that’s how I got to working on music, I still talk to the friends that made the group together, they are actually some of my closest friends till date, and work on music and business plans with them, funny how life works out that way.

What do we need to know about your latest project?
My latest single is a vibe, it’s just good vibes and great energy. It’s me taking it a step farther to showing I can make more than rap and create sounds and sonics I care about.

What truly sets you apart from other artists?
Man, this is always an interesting one, but I believe my background and life experience… See I come from Nigeria, I lived there till I was 18, so Nigeria basically raised me, and the things I’ve seen there, the culture the people the food wow, I could go on a rant but it’s super enriching to who I am as a person today. Now take that with moving to Canada by myself and having to figure things out and grow on my own, you get to see and experience different worlds. I’m also self taught in recording and sound engineering took me about two years to get the sound I wanted for myself, but through that process I got to really experiment with my sounds and a lot of artist don’t get to do this just sit down and play with their vocals, and really end up on dimensional.

What will I learn or how will my life improve by listening to your music?
I don’t know about all of that, but I can say it will add more of a good vibe in your day.

Tell us about the first song you wrote and / or the first gig you played and what you got paid.
Ha! First song I wrote I didn’t even write it, I think it was for that Christmas program, my friend wrote my lyrics for me, it was ridiculous I’m not going to lie, but fun all the same.

What is the best / worst / strangest / most memorable performance you gave?
I played a show in a uni, and yo it was super odd… First off uni students go hard, secondly I don’t know if this girl was high or drunk or both but she was clearly gone, I’m on stage right doing my set and all, and she walks from the crowd reaches over the barricades and grabs my privates, it took about three people to yank her off… it was so odd man, her eyes rolled behind her head, anyhow, I finished off my set and got to stepping.

What artist or style of music do you love that would surprise people?
There’s really none that would surprise people just because of how the Internet has made everyone so connected especially the youth when it comes to music and art.

What are your favourite songs / albums / artists right now?
Would have to be Snowchild by The Weeknd.

How about some other favourites: Authors, movies, painters, you name it.
Leonardo DiCaprio, that’s all, that’s the one.

Who would you be starstruck to meet?
Maybe Beyoncé and Jay z but I’d play it cool.

What do you drive and why?
I don’t drive, because I’m broke and can’t afford a car lol — no, I haven’t gotten my full license yet, that’s why I don’t drive.

What superpower do you want and how would you use it?
Teleportation, and just use it to travel man! Wanna go see the world, either that or Dr. Manhattan’s powers (from Watchmen), except I can do things with his powers and not be a slave to time and space.

If I had a potluck, what would you bring?
Suya!!! It’s a spicy Nigerian meat dish, you’d love it.

What current trend or popular thing do you not understand at all?
TikTok, but it’s not really for me now, is it?

Tell us about your current and/or former pets.
Never had one to be honest.

If you could have any other job besides music, what would it be and why?
I’d be a project manager.

What’s the best advice and/or worst advice you were ever given?
Worst advice was to keep working without taking breaks or rest… All that I’m always working killed me on the inside, I had to come to terms with taking things at my own pace, doesn’t mean to be lazy though, but things will get done once your able to realise your pace.
