Late-Night TV Music (Female Future Edition) | June 11, 2020

Three Clarks give us something to look forward to. Avril? Not so much.

The future, as they say, is female. And the late-night talk shows apparently decided to get a jump on the whole affair with Thursday’s musical lineup. The most interesting and inspirational performance of the evening had to be gospel duo The Clark Sisters, who took us all to church — literally and figuratively — with a five-song 17-minute medley of spiritual fare on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Coincidentally, while that was all going down, a very different Clark — that would country singer Brandy Clark — delivered an acoustic performance of her number You Can’t Come Over to The Late Late Show With James Corden. Finally, in non-Clark appearances, eternal teenager Avril Lavigne got out her hot pink microphone to sing her latest power ballad We Are Warriors (minus her Covid-themed video) for The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Consider that last one a reminder: We still have slog through the present before we can enjoy that glorious future.
