The late-night TV world continues to reinvent itself on a daily basis. But some things never change. Like the inadvertent and coincidental musical themes that continue to surface. Monday, for instance, was clearly Cover Tunes Night. Start with Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong, presenting a solo home-studio performance of the newly timely Tommy James classic I Think We’re Alone Now for The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Bonus points to Billie — clearly a type-A control freak if there ever was one — for going to the trouble of recording all the backing tracks. And for wearing big-boy clothes. Not surprisingly, My Morning Jacket’s shaggy singer-guitarist Jim James did neither for his rendition of Bill Withers’ Lean On Me on The Late Show Starring Stephen Colbert — but still managed to deliver a moving, personal tribute to the late, great singer-songwriter. There was also a third cover: A revamped show tune from Les Miz, performed by some oddball rando family extending their 15 seconds of viral video fame on Jimmy Kimmel Live. But I’m not going to to share that here. Because really, haven’t we all suffered enough?
