John Prine, Jake Shears and Taylor Mac are three of a kind on the tube.

Sometimes good things really do come in threes. Case in point: The idiosyncratic trio of musical artists who popped up on Monday night’s chat shows. First, performance artist Taylor Mac spangled his way through a rousing cover of Patti Smith‘s People Have the Power on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Then Scissor Sisters singer Jake Shears showed off his Broadway dreams (and his legs) while taking us to Creep City on Late Night with Seth Meyers. But for my money, you couldn’t top folk icon John Prine‘s whimsical and winsome version of When I Get to Heaven on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon (above). It’s so good I’ll even forgive the mean thing he says about critics.
