It isn’t every day that I wake up to discover a new song about my hometown online. But today is the exception — courtesy of iconoclastic troubadour Mark Kozelek and his new track Winnipeg. The rambling 10-minute number from his upcoming album All The Best, Isaac Hayes comes off like one long Yelp review as the downbeat, deadpan Kozelek chronicles his most recent visit to the city in vivid detail — he checks into his hotel (extra blankets, please!), strolls the downtown streets, eats at the Merchant Kitchen, shops at Giant Tiger, browses in some bookshops, enjoys our diversity (and pay phones), and interacts with everyone from sketchy street types to opinionated fans at his gig. It’s easily the most detailed and realistic song about Winnipeg since the glory days of John K. Samson and Weakerthans (sorry, Lee Ranaldo). And hey, if Tourism Winnipeg is looking for a new theme song ..
