Dany Laj & The Looks deliver a wake-up call to the queen of the underground in their new single and video Annie — premiering exclusively on Tinnitist.
Taken from the Montreal-based band’s upcoming studio album Everything is New Again — due for release Sept. 13 — the power-pop nugget is presented here in both English and French, and loses none of its punch and potency in the translation.
An unstoppable force waiting to win your heart, the Kirkland Lake singer-songwriter relies on catchy hooks, intertwining melodies and heartfelt songs to help him seamlessly meld rock, folk, and country with deeply rooted power-pop to give his songs “a certain ‘joie de vivre’.”
Laj started by playing solo shows in small Toronto bars, building up his repertoire and garnering a small legion of fans. In 2010, he decided to add a backing group, giving more life to his songs; this led to the release of his first EP The Match in November of that year.
In 2011 he was joined by Jeanette Dowling, who would become his bandleader and life partner. The pair relocated to Montreal, subsequently releasing the Telepathic Voices EP to critical acclaim. In 2015 came their first LP Word On The Street, generating enough buzz to catch the ear of power-pop legend Paul Collins, who invited them to join forces for a North American tour.
Now, with years of touring under his belt, Laj and co. are turning heads everywhere from dive bars and church basements to festival stages. The band’s spirited sets showcase their power pop/punk ethos, adhering to a simple philosophy: Write good songs, play them well, and have a good time. This is pure pop.
