Fifty years ago today, The Beatles shot the iconic cover of Abbey Road on the crosswalk outside the famed London recording studio. So there really could be no better day for them to announce the upcoming release of the 50th anniversary box set of Abbey Road. Like the last few expanded reissues from the Fabs’ catalogue, it will include plenty of outtakes along with the original album, which has been remastered and remixed from the original tapes by Giles (son of George) Martin. I don’t know how you feel about the new mixes, but so far, I’ve enjoyed them — they’ve been done tastefully and logically, and invariably bring out some element or performance in the songs that I never heard or noticed before. I expect this one will be the same. Watch the video above for more details on the Sept. 27 release. As always, it was just one of many new titles announced today — there’s also a Cure live box set on the way, along with a Wildhearts EP, a new Hootie & The Blowfish album (why, Lord, why?) and tons more. All the latest additions are below, and the ever-growing fall list can be seen on the Upcoming Releases page.
