Chrome Harvest don’t want to fight the good fight alone on their enthralling and ethereal new single Need You — premiering exclusively on Tinnitist.
Featuring vocals from Sarah Day, this immersive new track from the Alberta indie-folk outfit proudly wears its passionate, committed heart on its stylish sleeve. Although the track barely breaks the two-minute mark, it features more emotion, artistry and originality that some bands deliver in decades. Tenderly assembled from gently strummed guitars, lightly thumping tom-toms, shimmering keyboards and glitchy electronic textures, the understatedly urgent track is topped by paired vocals that drift along like clouds, dreamily yearning for the comforting solidarity of love amid the terror and tumult of protest and resistance:
“Quick as a fly
Free like an eagle
A moon setter
I needed you now
I feel the thrill now
I took the 5,
Joined the trouble outside.
Starting to feel like yeah,
It’s the last time.
When the ketted kids couldn’t stop crying
And those veterans watched us from the side.”
Dense, textured, and full of heart, the Lethbridge band’s music is constantly pushing boundaries, weaving in elements of indie rock, experimental textures, and lush arrangements. Think Spiritualized meets Sufjan Stevens, but with a distinct Albertan undercurrent. At the center of it all are songs that cut deep — personal, introspective, and raw. Their latest self-titled album is their most vulnerable yet, exploring themes of self-identity, honesty, and the struggle to carve out space in the world. It also highlights underrepresented voices in folk music, particularly from South Asian and LGBTQ+ perspectives — something rarely heard in Alberta’s folk scene.
Their debut album Sun-Circuit (2023) made waves on local radio charts and set the stage for what’s to come. Their latest releases and live performances have continued to build momentum, catching the attention of national media and pushing their artistry even further. What started as a university project between Chris Jerwin (guitar / piano / vocals) and Ben Wellman (banjo / guitar / vocals) in an audio production class — has since evolved into a full-fledged music collective. Today, the band includes Evan Brownlee (drums / percussion), Keilan Hakstol (drums / percussion), Connor McGinnis (bass), Ray Wong (saxophone) and Cori Campbell (saxophone) — a tight-knit group of musicians who genuinely love creating together.
