These came out in 2005 — or at least that’s when I got ’em. Here’s what I said about them back then (with some minor editing):
Fame has finally caught up to these Athens, Ga., Southern rockers, thanks to hard-hitting, barnburning discs like The Dirty South, Decoration Day and their 2001 Lynyrd Skynyrd-inspired masterwork Southern Rock Opera.
Now you can catch up with their early days thanks to remastered reissues of their first two discs, Gangstabilly and Pizza Deliverance. As the titles might suggest, the lyrical tone tends to be more irreverently redneck than that of their later works, but their rangy, Crazy Horse sound is already there in all its ragged glory.
FIRST RELEASED: 1998 & 1999.
HIGHLIGHTS: Gangstabilly essentials include The Living Bubba, Why Henry Drinks, 18 Wheels of Love, Steve McQueen and Buttholeville. Pizza Deliverance features Too Much Sex (Too Little Jesus), The President’s Penis is Missing and the memorable The Night G.G. Allin Came to Town.
EXTRAS! EXTRAS! Lyrics, snazzy digipak covers, and short liner-note essays by DBT driver Patterson Hood.
