Classic Album Review: Jennifer Lopez | Rebirth

This came out in 2005 — or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

Rebirth? Remarried would be more like it.

Aside from the presence of her next ex-husband Marc Anthony, this tedious fourth disc from Jennifer Lopez — or J.Lo or Lola or La-la or Tinky Winky or whatever she calls herself this week — isn’t radically different from 2002’s This is Me … Then.

Once again, most of these 11 tunes are one-dimensional urban soul grooves phoned in by hired-gun producers (Rodney Jerkins, Timbaland and Big Boi get the cheques this time). Once again, Lopez’s high, nasal vocals are as flimsy as her outfits — laughable when she lowers them to a whisper to play sultry, and cringe-inducing when she cranks it up and tries to act like she can really sing. And once again, despite all the high-priced help and all her “Jennny from tha block” posturing, she possesses all the depth and sincerity of Paris Hilton.

The high point is the Prince-like Cherry Pie (which, ironically, she co-wrote). The funniest cut has to be the pining post-Bennifer number He’ll Be Back, which must be a real boost to the current Mr. Lopez’s sense of security. As for the rest of Rebirth, well, put it this way: At one point, “Jenny Lo” (ah, so now we know) promises she’ll “hold you down.” If she wants anyone to listen to this again, she’ll have to.
