Classic Album Review: Various Artists | Guess Who’s Home

This came out in 2005 — or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

STYLE: Wheatfield soul power.

SOUNDS LIKE: A bunch of homegrown Winnipeg boys and girls singin’ another prairie tune.

POINTED COMMENTS: Could there be a more perfect Guess Who tribute disc than this 18-song set of Burton Cummings and Randy Bachman classics revamped and updated by a varied cast of hometown artists? From The Perpetrators’ sizzling opener Hang On To Your Life to Joey Gregorash’s closing live version of Shakin’ All Over, this is a blast. And a must-have for any Guess Who fan. Maybe someone should send one to the Juno folks. Then again, never mind. They probably wouldn’t listen to it, anyway.

STANDOUTS: Almost all these tracks are memorable, but the D. Rangers’ rootsy rejig of Runnin’ Back to Saskatoon, Scott Nolan’s thundering Guns Guns Guns, Mitch Funk and The Fabulous Kildonans’ punkified Bus Rider and The Rowdymen’s country-honkin’ Clap For the Wolfman are unforgettable.
