Classic Album Review: Elevator | August

This came out in 2005 — or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

They say drugs ruin your … um, whaddaycallit again? Oh yeah, your concentration. Well, either they’re wrong or Elevator are a lot straighter than they act.

August, the latest platter of psychedelic garage-noise from these former Eric’s Trippers (and sidekick Dallas Good of The Sadies), is another lysergic freakout of mindbending proportions, with a couple of interstellar-overdrive epics and tons of buzzy, fuzzy, hallucinogenic swirl. But what’s really freaky is that it might also be their most commercially accessible offering, thanks to plenty of short, sharp tunes loaded with strong melodies, catchy hooks and memorable choruses. So next time somebody tells you drugs will wreck your mind, play them this album. And don’t forget to tell them … uh, what was I talking about again?
