Classic Album Review: Dirty Vegas | One

The electronica trio ditch the synths for electric guitars — with dismal results.

This came out in 2004 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

Hey, didn’t these guys used to be an electronica band? Fans of Dirty Vegas — or anybody who remembers Days Go By from that Mitsubishi TV ad a few years back — will likely be asking themselves the same thing after hearing their second disc One.

Trading in the beatboxes for live drums, turning down the synthesizers to make room for chiming guitars and penning a program of cliche-riddled, cheeseball Brit-rock reminiscent of a bad U2 tribute band, this trio quickly squander whatever dance music credibility they once had, without gaining any rock points in the process. Plus, for a disc decorated with Playboy bunny pics, this is one of the limpest releases in recent memory. Bottom line: One has nothing going for it.
