Holden Miller pleads an appealing case in his winning new EP Holden Miller v. The State Of California — showcasing today on Tinnitist.
A self-described “professional singer-songwriter, dancer, friend and human,” Miller makes it clear he’s also a gifted practitioner of indie-rock, folk-pop and on this five song EP. From the slightly nervous skittish statement of Eggshell (“Sometimes I just get overwhelmed”) through melodic and magnetizing gems like Eaten By Flowers and Cool to the forceful closing argument of Final Boss (“I think I lost the game”), Holden delivers his blend of spry melodies, dusty vocals and playful vibes with conviction. The verdict: He acquits himself admirably.
According to his press release, Miller’s music is supposed to feel unique, yet relatable. Like it’s supposed to make you go, ‘I haven’t heard someone say this before, but I’ve definitely felt this way before.’ Holden also loves to help others put their thoughts into words, writing songs with artists such as Medium Build and American Idol winner Abi Carter.
When it comes to singer-songwriters with folk and pop undertones, it takes a lot to stand out from the crowd, and Miller says he’s up for the challenge. He creates music that holds a mirror to the experiences of other young people by approaching his songwriting without pretension.
Miller believes he is able to push the boundaries of what a contemporary singer-songwriter can look like through broad, often impressionistic interpretations of anxiety, the passage of time, and love and heartbreak, allowling his music to resonate with a wide audience even beyond his own demographic.
In 2021, after graduating college at the top of his class, Miller moved from Long Island to L.A. to pursue music full-time. As he says: “Follow your dreams, kids, even if it makes you anxious sometimes.”
