Classic Album Review: Destiny’s Child | Destiny Fulfilled

The superstar trio's reunion album has the whiff of contractual obligation about it.

This came out in 2004 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

You’d think these women fulfilled their collective destiny with hits like Bootylicious and Survivor. Just as you’d think Beyoncé fulfilled her own destiny with her breakthrough solo smash Crazy In Love.

So topping — or even repeating — those successes would seem easier said than done. And they aren’t making it any easier on themselves with this bland and disappointing reunion set. Admittedly, Destiny Fulfilled starts off strong with Lose My Breath and Soldier, two bump ’n’ grind dance-floor fillers. But before you can say Say My Name, it loses its groove and gets bogged down in slow-jam R&B ballads. Most of them are instantly forgettable, except for Cater 2 U, and that’s memorable only for its ridiculous lyrics about how far these gals will go to please their men (so much for Independent Women).

There’s no disputing the power of Beyonce’s vocals and the striking beauty of the trio’s harmonies. But ultimately, most of these 11 tepid cuts sound more like something designed to fulfil a contractual obligation as opposed to a collective destiny.
