Jovin Webb is on a roll with his gritty new single and live-in-the-studio video I’m A Drifter — showcasing today on Tinnitist.
The title track and latest preview of the singer-songwriter and American Idol alum’s upcoming debut album Drifter (due Oct 18), Webb’s new offering is a rough-and-ready blues shuffle that packs a potent punch. Backed by a crack band that includes guitarist Kenny Greenberg, keyboardist Mike Rojas, bassist Rob Cureton and producer Tom Hambridge behind the drums, Webb’s gravelly growl rides the line between blues, soul and R&B as he spins a tale of restlessness and a life without attachments:
“I don’t want your trouble
I don’t need your help
I can do bad all by myself
I’m a son of a sinner
A broken man
I’m a midnight traveler
All across the land
I go with the wind
I’m a rollin’ stone
Where I lay my hat
I make it my home
I’m a drifter man, yes I am.”
“I’m A Drifter is a song about late nights and one-night-stands — it’s some true lifestyle blues,” Webb shares with a good-natured laugh. It’s also a nod to the blues classics that have shaped Webb’s musical journey, crossing the spirit of The Temptations’ Papa Was A Rolling Stone and Muddy Waters’ Rollin’ Stone. Atop a thumping bass line, a creeping low-neck guitar lick and rock-solid drumming, Webb’s raw and soulful delivery captures the essence of the track, balancing gritty realism with introspective moments.
The video, shot during the recording session, offers fans a unique behind-the-scenes look at Webb’s creative process, featuring his passionate vocal performance and the synergy between the musicians in the studio. This stripped-back setting amplifies the authenticity of the song and gives viewers an intimate glimpse into the making of Drifter.
Produced by multi-Grammy winner Hambridge (Buddy Guy, Susan Tedeschi, Christone “Kingfish” Ingram), Drifter is a 12-track exploration of Webb’s life, blending blues, soul, and Southern rock. From the haunting Bottom Of A Bottle to the socially conscious Save Me, each song reveals a piece of Webb’s journey as he navigates love, loss, and personal redemption.
