Classic Album Review: Los Lobos | Ride This

The L.A. wolf pack serve up an EP of swell covers by Waits, Cosello, Alvin & more.

This came out in 2004 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

Los Lobos clearly believe one good turn deserves another.

For their latest disc The Ride, the Angelino mariachis enlisted the aid of amigos like Tom Waits, Elvis Costello, Dave Alvin, Richard Thompson and Ruben Blades. On Ride This, the boys repay the debt by covering a few of their compadres’ classic cuts. Kicking off with the twangy menace of Waits’ Jockey Full of Bourbon, the wolves roam typically far and wide, treating us to the horn-laced soul power of Bobby Womack’s More Than I Can Stand, a snarling version of Costello’s Uncomplicated, a slow-burning take on Thompson’s Shoot Out The Lights and a barnburning live recording of Alvin’s Marie Marie. A good turn indeed. How about another?
