Classic Album Review: Styx | Brave New World

The classic rockers present an instantly forgettable collection of pop fluff.

This came out in 1999 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

One of South Park’s greatest moments comes when Eric Cartman gets the Styx classic Come Sail Away stuck in his head — and can’t get rid of it unless he sings the whole song from beginning to end.

He’d have no such trouble with any of the tracks from their latest CD Brave New World; heck, I just listened to it, and I can’t really recall any of ’em. Oh sure, I remember what they sounded like — a few rocked, but most were Billy Joel-style piano ballads that wouldn’t be out of place in an off-Broadway musical about Aldous Huxley. And I seem to recall that for some bizarre reason, the soulful opening track sounded like (I swear I’m not making this up) Backstreet Boys. Why? Your guess is as good as mine.
