Classic Album Review: k.d. lang | Hymns Of The 49th Parallel

The ex-pat crooner's CanCon covers set is swollen with true patriot love, eh?

This came out in 2004 – or at least that’s when I got it. Here’s what I said about it back then (with some minor editing):

Looks like k.d. lang is feeling a little homesick these days. At least in the musical sense.

Hymns Of The 49th Parallel finds the ex-pat crooner reaffirming her roots by delivering sophisticated, orchestrated covers of a slew of CanCon classics: Neil Young’s After the Gold Rush and Helpless, Leonard Cohen’s Bird On A Wire and Hallelujah, Joni Mitchell’s A Case of You and Jericho. Toss in Ron Sexsmith’s Fallen for a nod to the younger fans and k.d.’s own Simple, and you’ve got a disc so swelled with true patriot love you should be able to buy it with Canadian Tire money, eh?
